What to Do Before You Pay a Medical Bill

Updated 2026-08-18

Paying a medical bill closes the door on disputing it later in most cases. If anything about the bill gives you pause, it's worth ten minutes to check these before you pay.

The checklist

  1. Do you have the itemized bill? If not, request it before doing anything else.
  2. Do you have the EOB for this same date of service? If you're insured and don't have it yet, wait for it or call your insurer for the numbers.
  3. Do the two documents agree on what was billed and what you owe?
  4. Is everyone who treated you shown as in-network — including anesthesiologists, radiologists, and any specialist who wasn't your main provider?
  5. Is there a deadline — a due date, a "pay by" discount, or a collections threshold — that limits how long you have to sort this out?
  6. Have you asked about financial assistance? Many hospitals, especially nonprofits, are required to offer income-based discounts or charity care, and won't volunteer this unless you ask.

If everything checks out

Pay it. Most bills are correct, and there's no benefit to disputing a bill that's actually accurate.

If something doesn't check out, or you're not sure

You have a few options: call the billing office yourself, call your insurer, or have someone else do the comparison for you. A RomiCare medical bill review is built for exactly this — it checks your bill and EOB against a standard list of common billing and insurance issues and tells you, in plain language, what looks wrong, what's uncertain, and what to do next, before you pay anything you didn't actually owe.
