A prompt-pay discount is a lower price a provider offers if you pay quickly. The deadline might be before you leave, or within a set number of days after you get the offer. Providers choose whether to offer one, so the amount and the deadline vary. Some don't advertise it, so it's worth asking.
In 2008, the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reviewed 1 hospital system's plan. It offered 5% to 15% off, depending on the balance and when the patient paid.
For example, say you owe $2,000 and the hospital offers 10% off if you pay within 30 days. You'd pay $1,800 and save $200. Before you pay, make sure the bill is correct. If you can't pay all at once, ask about financial assistance or a payment plan instead. Our guide on how to negotiate a hospital bill has words you can use.
